Meniscus Injuries

A sudden leg twist or repeated squatting motion can injure or tear a meniscus. This may cause your knee to swell and hurt. Your knee may also stiffen and lock when you bend it.

Assessing the Problem

A meniscus can tear in a number of ways. Your surgeon may find a small tear along the edge of a meniscus. Or there may be a larger tear deep in the meniscus.

Repairing the Damage

Treatment depends on where the tear occurs. In some cases, the tear may be repaired with sutures (stitches). In other cases, your surgeon may trim back the damaged tissue.

Your Recovery

A torn meniscus may take from 3 weeks to 3 months or more to heal. But a full recovery is likely. To help your knee heal, you may be asked to do some or all of the following:

  • Use crutches as instructed.
  • Wear a knee brace for a few weeks if your meniscus has been repaired.
  • Exercise to regain range of motion and strength in your knee.
