Shin Splints & Stress Fractures

INJURIES TO THE LOWER LEG

  1. Shin splints
    Shin splints is a term used to describe categoric pain in the lower leg.
  2. Stress fractures
    The athlete with a stress fracture will complain of pain localized to one specific region which is the inside lower part of the lower leg. The pain increases with activity.
  3. Tendonitis
    Pain associated with tendonitis increases before and after an activity and is less during the activity.
  4. Anterior Compartment Syndrome
    Athletes with anterior compartment syndrome have pain located on the front of the lower leg. Pain increases with activity. Numbness and tingling in the foot may also occur.
  5. Foot and ankle problems
    There are many problems that can occur in the foot and ankle such as ankle sprains, plantarfasciaitis, stress fractures, and heel or arch pain.

If you are experiencing any of these lower leg problems, proper diagnosis is very important. Each condition is treated differently. An evaluation and running analysis is recommended. A running analysis program is offered at the Orthopedic Institute. Proper footwear appliances can assist in the correction of some lower leg problems. Rarely is surgery needed to correct these problems.
