What You Can Do To Help Preserve Your Independence
What is osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a disease that gradually weakens bones, so they become more and more fragile and likely to break. These brittle bones may result in painful fractures of the spine, wrists, hips or other bones. They can turn an active life into one of disability and dependence.
Don't wait for broken bones.
Osteoporosis is treatable, but early diagnosis is important. Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) measures the mineral content of bone and can detect osteoporosis in its early stage before fractures occur.
Patients can be examined while lying comfortably on a padded table. The entire procedure lasts less than a half-hour and no change of clothing is required.
Too many people believe that osteoporosis is an inevitable part of aging. It isn't. Talk to your doctor about lowering your risk of broken bones in the future. He or she may recommend that you have a bone density test.
A bone density can be obtained at the Orthopedic Institute. You may ask your own doctor to schedule a test or see one of the physicians at the Orthopedic Institute.
