Orthopedic Institute Offers an Innovative Option to Traditional Spinal Fusion Surgery
The BAK interbody fusion system utilizes small threaded metal cylinders to restore the degenerated disc space to or near its original height, relieving any pressure on nerves. During this particular surgery, the doctor removes portions of the painful disc and vertebral bones, allowing the implants to be inserted into place. A small amount of bone is then taken from the patient's hip and packed inside the BAK implants. This allows the bone to grow through and around the implant, fusing the vertebral bodies and alleviating the back pain. The BAK system can be implanted from either a front (anterior) or back (posterior) surgical approach.
Based on the findings of the FDA clinical study and comparisons to other fusion methods, the BAK Interbody Fusion System offers advantages over traditional fusion methods including a lower complication rate, lower blood loss during surgery, less postoperative pain and quicker return to daily activities.
Back pain caused by disc wear can be alleviated with spinal fusion surgery. In the past, this type of surgery required extended recovery time. However, a new advancement in medical technology is allowing patients to return to normal activities faster, with minimized postoperative pain.
If a patient's back problem is caused by disc degeneration, a spinal fusion may be suggested. A spinal fusion involves placing a bone graft between two or more vertebrae, causing the vertebrae to grow together or fuse.
The BAK Interbody Fusion System is an innovative technique for spinal fusion which the Orthopedic Institute doctors have been performing for several years. In fact, doctors from the Orthopedic Institute participated in the FDA clinical studies of the BAK system. The studies, which resulted in FDA approval, showed significant reductions in pain and increases in activity levels after fusion using the BAK system.
